The Smart Investor
What's Your Investment
Behavior?
By Ken Mahoney

As humans, we were not made to be perfect. Our strengths and weaknesses definitely cross over when it comes to our investing behaviors. No one person is alike.

The trick to better investing is to find a perfect balance, and this is easier said than done. It can take years to achieve this balance, and it takes a lot of experience and mental conditioning. But here are some tips that might help you along your journey towards better investing:

• Check every one of your investments on a consistent basis: Investing is a lot like maintaining a car. It may start right away, but you need to check on it regularly if you want it to last.

• Don’t check your investments too frequently: But at the same time, don’t make it the highlight of your existence. If it becomes an obsession, you may very well end up wealthy, but the road there will be filled with suffering.

• Don’t be negative or self-defeating: Negativity is a bad habit; in investing and in life. If you keep thinking that things will go wrong in your investments, that will deter any possible joy you derive from an increase in your stock.

• Don’t get too cocky, either. While it’s good to be positive, you always want to be prepared for the worst, because you never know. You may be doing well, but you never know when it can crash. If the stock crashes and you don’t know about it, you may be facing disaster.

• Live life in the moment. There’s a human tendency for us to live in the future. How many times have you thought to yourself, “When I have the money, I’ll buy this” or “When I get some money, I’ll do that?” Whatever it is, plan for it in the future, but don’t make it. We never think about what’s happening in the present moment in our lives. RBD

The Rockland Stock Index has lost some steam this year as did the major averages. The RSI is up 2.8% compared to the S&P which is up 3.5%.

The Rockland Stock Index strength is coming from financials, such as Provident and Presidential. The weaknesses in the index, came mostly from pharmaceutical stocks, especially that of Barr Pharm and Par Pharm.

Rockland County Stock leader AT&T added BellSouth as a dominant player in the South East and will bring Cingular under direct control.

Rockland's Par Pharmaceutical is a the subject of a class action. The action alleges that they reported earnings that were materially inflated as a result of accounting errors including an understatement of accounts receivable reserves. In response to these revelations, on July 6, 2006, Par stock fell $4.78 per share, losing nearly 26% of its value in one day on extremely high volume of over 9 million shares traded.
